Kevin Garnett has added a bit of intrigue to this weekend,
not only to fans with NBA All Star tickets, but to basketball fans across the
globe, as he claims this will be his final All-Star Game. While the 14-time
All-Star is probably not going to hang up his sneakers at the end of the
season, he has vowed that the game in Houston will be his final All-Star
appearance. Garnett has been a staple of the both the All-Star Game and the
league since being drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1995, coming to the
Boston Celtics in a trade in 2007. One of the greatest and most competitive
players in league history, he won the MVP award in 2004 with the Timberwolves,
and helped the Celtics win the NBA Championship in 2008. Garnett has slowed
down to a degree in recent seasons, but he has remained remarkably effective
despite reaching the 1,300 game plateau earlier in the season. He seemed to
find new life last year after switching to center full-time, allowing him to
avoid chasing younger power forwards around the perimeter on a more consistent
basis.
Garnett’s announcement seemingly opens up another frontcourt spot on the Eastern Conference roster next year, and several players stand to benefit from his decision. Tyson Chandler, Chris Bosh, Joakim Noah and Brook Lopez each made the All-Star team this year, but should find it much easier to make it back on the roster next season. Former All-Stars Al Horford and Roy Hibbert will have less competition as well, while young up and comers Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond should have a better shot at cracking the roster in the coming years. Garnett’s legacy is secure, and fans will still be able to watch his legendary competitiveness throughout the rest of the regular season and the playoffs. But the All-Star Game is undoubtedly losing one of the all-time greats after this weekend, so expect a little extra energy in Toyota Center on Sunday night when Garnett’s name is announced.
