Venue Review: Bill Graham Civic Auditorium

The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium is a large and cavernous concert venue that accommodates a crowd of 7,000 people. The venue was formerly known as the San Francisco Civic Auditorium and was renamed in honor of Graham after his untimely death in a helicopter crash in 1991. The venue has a long history of hosting large names in the recording business, most notably The Grateful Dead, who played many concerts at the venue. The remaining members of The Grateful Dead have continued to play at the auditorium under the name Furthur. The band most recently held their annual New Year's Eve run at the venue, playing there for three consecutive nights.

The venue is popular due to its large floor capacity. The floor is most often a general admission affair. This means that there are no seats on the floor and patrons are free to move around as they please. Some patrons complain about the acoustics of the venue due to its large size and cavernous nature. Sound engineers who are familiar with the venue are often able to make up for any sound issues with their technical prowess. The venue is also lauded for its user friendly atmosphere, such as its many bathrooms that keep fans from having to wait in long lines and miss portions of the show. Many fans recommend taking public transportation to the venue as parking is limited around the arena and the venue is close to the BART station. Minor complaints have to do with the price of drinks at the bar, but most fans agree that the service and selection are both excellent.
