Despite earning the No. 1 seed in the AFC, the Denver
Broncos were not able to punch their Super Bowl tickets in 2012, and will look
to take it a step further this season. Of course, the signing of future Hall of
Famer Peyton Manning was the key to last season’s success, as he showed little
ill effects of the neck injury that derailed his entire 2011 season. Manning
was phenomenal in his first season in the Mile High City, just missing out on
his fifth MVP award. He quickly changed the culture and attitude of the Denver
offense, helping receivers Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker blossom in the
process. Of course, Manning was also lucky to step into a situation with two
young, talented receivers at his disposal. The decision to franchise left
tackle Ryan Clady this offseason was a no-brainer, as the fifth year pro was
set to hit unrestricted free agency. The Boise State product is one of the best
left tackles in the league, and his presence is vital to the continued health
of Manning. The Broncos could look to add another running back at some point
this spring, but the offense is in good shape heading into 2013.
The defense also exceeded expectations, finishing second in
total defense and fourth in scoring defense. Von Miller turned in an All-Pro
season with 18.5 sacks, and Wesley Woodyard blossomed into one of the best
playmaking linebackers in the game. However, there are areas where the defense
can stand to make some additions. Champ Bailey has been one of the best corners
in the NFL for over a decade, but he appears to be slowing down, and the
Broncos should strongly consider drafting his eventual replacement sometime in
the near future. It would also be nice if the Broncos could add one more
defensive playmaker this offseason. While they did rack up 24 takeaways in
2012, that mark was only good for seventh in the AFC. Safeties Mike Adams and
Rahim Moore only combined for one interception last season, so Denver could
stand to add another ballhawk at some point in the draft. All things
considered, the Broncos enter 2013 as one of the more complete teams in the
league. They were one broken play from hosting the Patriots in the AFC
Championship Game, and Manning should have at least a couple more productive
seasons left in him. Despite the disappointment of last season, Denver has a
great chance to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy in MetLife Stadium next
February.
